Commissioned in 2482 the first ship of the class was named Colossus of Rhodes. Representing the UNSC’s first foray into supercarrier design and operation the Colossus class were designed as imposing symbols of the might of the UNSC to put any potential uprisings down. Act as the centre of a taskforce and a command and control ship. This task sent them to the farthest corners of human life. However due to lack of experience in these size of vessels and humanities primitive slipspace FTL systems many modifications had to be made. Including rebuilding the engineering section and issues with the super heavy mac cannons. This caused the early cancellation of the project with only 5 vessels of the class commissioned. The colossus class also included manufacturing and deployment facilities first tested on the famed UNSC Spirit of Fire.
Due to restrictions caused by the vessels early FTL drives the ships struggled to keep up with fleets to engage the rising threat of the covenant. Leading them to be stationed semi-permanently at distant colonies far away from the ongoing war. At one point this was thought to be in the hope that the covenant wouldn’t find the last colonies of humanity. 3 of the 5 ships are thought to remain active however their status is unknown beyond whispers of alien technology being added to keep the 70 year old ships space worthy.
