Journey: Dwarven Hold is our first instalment in the Journey: Supportless Modular Fantasy Terrain line. Built upon Voidship’s supportless, frame-free assembly logic using only walls, pillars and tiles, Journey aims to take what we have learned and explore new boundaries in supportless FDM terrain.
The Dwarven Hold set consists of 9 tiles, 17 wall and pillar parts, and 17 skirt pieces. The 40 × 40 mm square tile size provides enough room for expansive encounters using modern 32 mm heroic miniatures. The walls create a scenic boundary around the encounter while allowing for myriad room, corridor, corner and junction layouts, scaling from a simple 3 × 3 room to a sizeable Dwarven Hold with complex corridors, dead ends and interconnected rooms. The skirts can cover exposed connectors and dovetails while also replacing walls where needed, allowing for semi-open and exposed layouts.
We are committed to finding reliable and efficient ways to tackle terrain projects. As such, our supportless system is built around a philosophy of cost and time optimisation. This philosophy underpins the minimalist part families used throughout Voidship and Journey.
Our terrain is designed around the process parameters of the most common FDM printing setups rather than relying on unusually fine nozzles or very small layer heights to achieve the intended result. Our standard print settings use a 0.4 mm nozzle with a 0.2 mm global layer height, and the geometry is developed and tested with those parameters in mind. This allows the parts to retain their intended forms, surface definition and functionality without requiring settings that can dramatically increase printing time.
Our own testing also showed that frame grids can increase total printing time while offering diminishing returns in material savings due to the additional wall loops required within the frame. For that reason, Journey does away with the grid entirely: each tile connects directly to neighbouring tiles and walls using our supportless pentagonal connectors.
These minimalist part families are intended to give you useful, modular tools for building encounters, wargaming tables and scenic displays without locking the components into a single purpose. The same assembly can serve as a Dwarven city in a 5e campaign one day, become a bastion to defend in a game of AoS the next, and then be disassembled and repurposed as a backdrop for displaying your favourite Dwarven miniatures while they await their next foray at the weekend.
P.S. We have included our in-house print profile, which we use to print Journey components, as a .json file ready for slicer import. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment, send us a PM through our storefront, or DM us on Instagram at @cursedanvilofficial.
