A crone of ancient power. Baba Yaga is a story told to children by their parents to keep them in bed, away from the windows and from wandering the lands after sunset. Few know the grim truth that the stories they frighten their children with are real, and many are indeed, much worse. Her appearance is an omen of ill-fortune, and wherever she is spotted, children begin disappearing en-masse.

“In the quiet of night, when nary can be heard but the faint whisper of the wind and the caw of a bird, Baba Yaga stirs and stirs. Upon a mortar or barrel, she carries through the void of night, and any children who see her ghastly visage will find their last fright. Into her cauldron they will hop, becoming part of her bony broth.” 

A common rhyme sung to children of Grimmvale by their parents, warning against wandering in the night, or opening their windows to behold whatever creatures might dwell in the night. Little would many know that their rhyme is not a fable, but historical, borne from their ancestor’s own suffering at the hands of the ancient crone. But the tale and rhyme, like all things in time, has changed. Those who sing it do so blissfully ignorant of the horrific truth hidden beneath the veneer of a nursery rhyme. When children begin disappearing from villages en-masse, none think that it truly is the Baba Yaga responsible for their vanishing.
