Cursed Immortality

Season 2 - (1/4)

The Ironbound - Curse of Iron

Description

Feris was a student of the Arcane in his mortal life, and a brilliant one. He was chosen as an Honor student during his early years in the Ministry of Arcane Arts, solely from his innate talent from magic. Most students are chosen from families that pay well, but the ministry won't turn a blind eye to those that can bend magic so naturally. Feris was a son of a blacksmith, and they struggled to make ends meet every day. So from early years, Feris was surrounded by burning iron and metallic sounds every day.

One day, a wizard visited the blacksmith's shop, in search of armor to infuse with enchantments, and because Feris was in the room that day his life was changed. The wizard noticed the little boy looking at him with big eyes, and showed him some magic tricks. Feris was in absolute awe over this visit, and after that day slowly turned away from his father's shop to pursue the arcane.

Feris was obsessed with magic and enchantment, he wanted to become the greatest wizard in the lands, but he also wanted to help his father with his shop, so he spend a lot of time trying to enchant different armor pieces and swords to increase their value for his father, which turned the shop around. The shop was quickly noticed by the ministry from this sudden success of enchanted items and invited Feris to join the Academy.

As mentioned, Feris strived with his studies, and enchanting items became second nature to him. He showed promise for a long time, right until his father succumbed to heart disease. Feris didn't know of his disease until it was too late, which pulled him into a deep depression. He was sure he could have saved his father if he had only known earlier. This drove him to become more isolated, and he stayed mostly in his room, which slowly turned into absences from classes.

When the teachers tried to enter his room, they were met with a magical lock that they surprisingly couldn't break. Which made the higher-ups come and try to solve this issue, Feris needed to be disciplined.

When they finally managed to break down his door, they were met with a humanely horrific view, yet stunningly beautiful for Arcane students. The room was full of rats, birds, and 2 cats, and the smell was immense. Some rats ran out of the room, and the cats came to greet the Wizards. They quickly noticed that the cats had stitches in the chest area, which made them notice all the iron cages floating around in the air.

The cages contained small hearts, Feris had created Phylacteries for all the animals. He had found a way to eternal life. Feris lay on his table, seemingly in a coma, but you could see small knives and hooks floating around him as if he was magically operating on himself.

This ritual was too dark in the eyes of the ministry, and Feris was immediately banished from the Academy.

Lost, alone, Feris visited his father's old shop, but some other blacksmith had taken over to continue the work. This infuriated Feris, how dare this man to sit where his father once sat, and with a flick of his finger, the blacksmith's soul was drained into a small container. Feris cut open the Blacksmith's chest and carefully removed the heart, and encased the heart in iron. After a short while, the Blacksmith raised from the ground, mute, looking at Feris with a blank expression. He ordered the Blacksmith to bring as many tools and iron as possible, and they turned to leave the city.

No one knew where Feris went off to, and no one heard from or about him for ages. Some believed he reached for new goals through traveling the world, others believed he dove into a dark path, and it was only a matter of time until we would hear from him again.

Unfortunately, the latter turned out to be true. Rumors were slowly surfacing about a crypt that inhabited some dark powers in surrounding villages, many adventurers tried to delve into the crypt but never returned. Which made the villagers believe that either nothing was there, or something terrifying truly resided inside that scared the adventurers away, or worse. However, nothing really came out from the crypts, which also made the villagers believe, or maybe rather hope, that whatever was in there, stayed there.

This hope stayed true for some years, until one day, where the sky darkened in the area surrounding the crypt, and a lot of villagers started to disappear. This got the attention of the capital city from where Feris came from, and they had a gut feeling that they now knew where Feris went.

It was all true, Feris found a crypt in his travels where he chose to reside to tend to his new iron studies. He made his new blacksmith minion kidnap random adventurers that came too close to the crypt, so Feris had something to experiment on. This went on for a lot of years, both with successful and unsuccessful experiments. In the end, Feris found a way to completely fuse the soul to metal, by turning one's heart into a sort of beacon that connected its soul to metal. When Feris had perfected the art, he turned to experiment on himself, and after a long and painful procedure, he was successful. He had created a new body made of bone and iron that functioned as his own beacon, giving him eternal life.

Now his work could truly begin, he could with ease take a soul and fuse it to metal, and with vast amounts of bone and metal from experiments over the years, he had a small army in the blink of an eye. At first, he was satisfied with his result, but he still felt empty. He was immortal, yes, but now what? He had achieved his life goal, so now what?

That was when he realized that he wanted to show those arrogant council members how wrong they were. How he had achieved something they could never do, how they were now beneath him. The flesh is weak and needs to be replaced, he would change the world for the better. Everyone could be immortal with his help, that was his new goal.

As Feris, no, Feris was no more, a name for the weak flesh. No, he was now Archlich Fer'agosh Ironheart, Master of the Ironbound! As he started to prepare for his long march, the sky turned dark around his crypt.
