Merchants soon copied the design for their villas, trusting the low stone base to break charging beasts and siege carts while the upper planks turned arrows and prying eyes. Place this layered barrier around terraces, manors, or harbor districts, and let your adventurers wonder whether it is meant to hold back invaders, the river, or something far older that sleeps beneath the stones.
