The Battle of Villers-Bocage, fought on June 13, 1944, was a pivotal engagement during the Normandy campaign, emerging from the British Operation Perch. This offensive aimed for a rapid breakout from the D-Day bridgehead, with the British 7th Armoured Division tasked with seizing Villers-Bocage to exploit a perceived gap in German lines west of Caen. As leading elements of the 4th County of London Yeomanry entered the town, they were ambushed by SS-Hauptsturmführer Michael Wittmann of the SS Heavy Tank Battalion 101. Wittmann, commanding a formidable Tiger I heavy tank, launched a single-handed assault that decimated numerous Cromwell tanks, Sherman Fireflies, half-tracks, and Universal Carriers within the town and on the main road to Villers-Bocage. His audacious action created widespread chaos, effectively halting the British advance. Subsequent intense fighting involved close-quarters urban combat and concerted German counter-attacks throughout the day, preventing the British from firmly establishing their positions. The battle concluded with a tactical German victory, denying the British 7th Armoured Division its objective and preventing the planned breakout. Villers-Bocage underscored the potent threat of the Tiger I and demonstrated how a single skilled commander could significantly impact the battlefield, forcing the Allies into a protracted attritional struggle in Normandy.
