The name Kama-deva can be translated as 'god of love'. Deva means heavenly or divine, and refers to a deity in Hinduism. Kama means "desire" or "longing", especially as in sensual or sexual love.
Kāmadeva is represented as a young, handsome man who wields a bow and arrows. His bow is made of sugarcane, and his arrows are decorated with five kinds of fragrant flowers. He is also depicted with five arrows on his sugarcane bow. Each symbolising the heart, eye, head, lips and the body, alluding to the role each part plays in falling in love.
Kamdev is often depicted seated on a parrot, carrying a bow made of sugarcane stalk, strung by a line of bees.
His companions are a cuckoo, a parrot, humming bees, the season of spring, and the gentle breeze.
