Lutra nippon, commonly known as the Japanese river otter, is a species of otter native to Japan. It is one of the smallest otter species, with adults weighing between 5-7 kg.
The Japanese river otter was once widespread throughout Japan, but due to habitat loss, hunting, and pollution, it was declared extinct.
