Description

Sharovipteryx mirabilis was a unique, small gliding reptile from the Late Triassic period, approximately 225 million years ago.

Measuring about 30 centimeters long, it is notable for its highly specialized wing structure.

Unlike other gliding animals, Sharovipteryx had large, wing-like membranes on its hind legs, which allowed it to glide between trees, with smaller membranes on its front limbs providing stability.

Its long, tapering tail likely helped with maneuvering in flight.

Found in Kazakhstan, Sharovipteryx is an early example of powered flight evolution, offering a fascinating glimpse into how various body plans adapted for gliding or flight long before birds or pterosaurs.
