Description

Arctodus pristinus, also known as the lesser short-faced bear, was a large extinct bear species that lived in North America during the Pleistocene epoch, approximately 1.8 million to 10,000 years ago.

Smaller and less robust than its relative, Arctodus simus, it reached heights of around 2.5 meters when standing upright.

A. pristinus was an omnivore, with a diet likely consisting of plants, carrion, and small prey.

Its long legs suggest it was a capable runner, potentially for scavenging or hunting. Fossil evidence is primarily found in the southeastern United States, providing insights into the diverse megafauna of Ice Age ecosystems.
