Description
Meiolania platyceps was a large, prehistoric turtle from the Pleistocene of Australia and nearby islands, including Lord Howe Island.
It measured up to 2.5 meters in length and had a heavily armored body with a distinctive, spiked tail and horned skull, likely used for defense against predators.
Unlike modern turtles, Meiolania had a rigid shell that limited its ability to retract its head. It was a herbivore, feeding on tough vegetation.
This species became extinct due to climate changes and possibly human activity.
