Description
Darwinopterus modularis was a genus of pterosaur from the Middle Jurassic period, about 160 million years ago, discovered in China.
It displayed a unique blend of features seen in both primitive and advanced pterosaurs, with a long tail like earlier species and a more developed skull resembling later forms.
This mosaic anatomy supports the idea of modular evolution—where body parts evolve in coordinated units.
Darwinopterus had sharp teeth and a lightweight frame, suggesting it was an agile flier that likely hunted insects or small vertebrates.
Its discovery provided a key link in understanding the evolutionary transition between early and later pterosaurs.
