Description
Tetracynodon tenuis was a small, extinct therapsid from the Late Permian to Early Triassic of South Africa.
Belonging to the group Therocephalia, it was one of the few synapsids to survive the devastating Permian-Triassic mass extinction.
Tetracynodon was a carnivorous or insectivorous animal, characterized by its slender skull, sharp teeth, and lightweight build. Its anatomy shows a mix of primitive and advanced features, including traits linked to the later evolution of mammals.
Its survival across the extinction boundary suggests it was adaptable, possibly due to its small size, generalist diet, and ability to exploit ecological niches left vacant by extinctions.
