Description

Nigersaurus taqueti was a remarkable sauropod dinosaur that lived about 115 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous in what is now Niger, Africa.

Unlike most long-necked dinosaurs, it had a short neck and a wide, squared snout lined with over 500 replaceable teeth arranged in rows.

These teeth formed a specialized dental battery for grazing on low-growing plants, much like a prehistoric lawnmower.

Its lightweight skull was full of openings, making it fragile but efficient. Discovered in the Sahara Desert, Nigersaurus revealed unexpected diversity among sauropods and showed that some members of this giant dinosaur group adapted to highly specialized feeding strategies in lush floodplain environments.
