Description
Sinosaurophargis yunguiensis is a rare and unusual marine reptile from the Middle Triassic of what is now southern China.
It belonged to a distinctive group of armored sauropterygians, characterized by a broad, flattened body covered in a mosaic of small, bony plates rather than large scutes.
This armor likely provided protection from predators while allowing flexibility in the water.
Its limbs were adapted into paddle-like structures for swimming, suggesting a slow but steady lifestyle in shallow coastal seas.
With its unique body plan and heavy armor, Sinosaurophargis represents an important experiment in marine reptile evolution during the Triassic period.
