Description
Desmostylus hesperus was a large, herbivorous marine mammal that lived along the Pacific coasts of North America and Japan during the Miocene epoch.
It belonged to the extinct order Desmostylia, known for their unique pillar-like teeth adapted for crushing aquatic vegetation.
With a bulky body, strong limbs, and possibly webbed feet, Desmostylus likely inhabited shallow coastal waters, estuaries, and river mouths.
It may have walked along the seafloor while feeding on seagrasses and algae.
Its unusual anatomy and lifestyle make it one of the most distinctive and enigmatic marine mammals in prehistoric ecosystems.
