Description

Hexaprotodon sivalensis was a large prehistoric hippopotamus that lived across the Indian subcontinent during the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs.

Fossils discovered in the Siwalik Hills of India, Pakistan, and neighboring regions indicate it inhabited rivers, lakes, and floodplains with abundant vegetation.

Like modern hippos, it was a powerful semiaquatic herbivore, grazing on grasses and aquatic plants while spending much of the day submerged in water.

Distinguished by its larger size and multiple prominent incisors, Hexaprotodon sivalensis was well adapted to its environment. Climate shifts and changing river systems eventually contributed to its extinction before historic times.
