Description
Utahraptor ostrommaysi was the largest known member of the dromaeosaurid, or "raptor," family, living during the Early Cretaceous around 135 million years ago in what is now Utah, USA.
Reaching up to seven meters in length, it possessed powerful hind limbs, grasping hands, and an enormous sickle-shaped claw on each foot for subduing prey.
Its body was almost certainly covered in feathers, reflecting its close relationship to birds.
Fossils suggest it hunted large herbivorous dinosaurs and may have occasionally scavenged. Named in honor of paleontologists John Ostrom and Chris Mays, Utahraptor ostrommaysi remains an iconic prehistoric predator.
