The HMS Surprise was L'Unité, a French Unité-class corvette captured by the Royal Navy in 1796. It is famous in real life for the recovery of HMS Hermione in 1799. The HMS Surprise is classified as a 28-gun ship, although it was equipped with twenty-four 32-pounder carronades, ten 18-pounder carronades, and four (or two) 4-pounder chase guns.
Present in the Master and Commander collection. It is the ship that appears more in the series of novels, being Jack at its command on different occasions.
