Backstory: The Bloodhunter Variant
As Clan Ghost Bear continued its trials of expansion across the Inner Sphere, their commanders identified a growing need for a fast but heavily armed and versatile OmniMech. This led to the development of the Gargoyle Bloodhunter, a deadly variant designed to lead fast-moving raiding groups with high close-quarters power, while maintaining long-range engagement capability.
The Bloodhunter name comes from its first successful deployment during a Trial of Possession against Clan Wolf. The Bloodhunter led a rapid-strike Star into the heart of Wolf supply lines, forcing their warriors to retreat under sustained long-range fire. Then, when the Wolves regrouped for close combat, the Bloodhunter variant's powerful autocannon and streak missiles cut through their ranks.
Though the Ghost Bears never openly made this variant a standard production line, individual Gargoyle Bloodhunter variants continue to appear in highly skilled warrior Stars. There is even a whispered rumor that this variant was specifically designed with help from defecting Clan Smoke Jaguar warriors, who wanted to bolster Ghost Bear hit-and-run capabilities. It now serves as a proof of the Ghost Bears’ continuing pragmatism, blending firepower, mobility, and ECM-driven surprise tactics.
Design Philosophy and Specifications
Chassis and Engine:
The Gargoyle Bloodhunter retains the same Series VII Endo Steel chassis and 400 XL engine from the standard Gargoyle. This powerful combination gives it a top speed of 86.4 km/h, allowing it to stay in step with faster OmniMechs while outpacing most other Assault-class 'Mechs.
Armor:
The Bloodhunter has 10.5 tons of Clan Ferro-Fibrous armor, providing excellent protection, though less than some other Assault 'Mechs. This trade-off in armor allows for more speed and heat management, keeping the Gargoyle mobile in the thick of combat.
Primary Weapons Loadout:
2x Clan ER Large Lasers (Left and Right Torso): The Bloodhunter sports two powerful Clan ER Large Lasers mounted in its torso. These are its main long-range weaponry, with an effective range of up to 25 hexes. These lasers allow it to strike at targets from a distance before closing the gap.
LB 10-X Autocannon (Right Arm): The LB 10-X Autocannon is a versatile ballistic weapon, capable of firing both solid slug rounds and cluster munitions. The inclusion of 4 tons of ammunition provides plenty of longevity in combat. The LB 10-X's ability to switch between slug for armor-piercing attacks or cluster for anti-infantry/anti-vehicle makes this an ideal multi-role weapon for the Bloodhunter.
Streak SRM-6 (Left Arm): For close-range combat, the Bloodhunter mounts a Clan Streak SRM-6. Its advanced guidance system ensures that no missiles are wasted unless they can hit, maximizing both damage and ammo efficiency. This system is particularly dangerous in point-blank engagements, where its 6 missile tubes can find weak spots in enemy armor.
4x ER Small Lasers (Torso, Arms): These lasers, scattered throughout the torso and arms, act as a close-quarters deterrent, ensuring that no light 'Mech can easily exploit the Bloodhunter's slower turning rate. The high heat output is manageable due to Clan double heat sinks, and these weapons serve as a secondary measure if the pilot is forced into knife-fighting range.
Additional Equipment:
ECM Suite (Left Torso): The inclusion of an ECM Suite provides electronic warfare capabilities, jamming enemy targeting systems and disrupting missile locks. This makes the Bloodhunter particularly difficult to engage with indirect fire and helps it stay hidden on the battlefield when combined with the right terrain. The ECM also bolsters its role as a leader of raiding parties, masking the movements of lighter allies.
Heat Management:
With 14 Clan Double Heat Sinks, the Bloodhunter has a solid heat dissipation system. Although the ER Large Lasers generate significant heat, and adding the smaller lasers and missile fire will push the heat levels further, this heat-sinking capacity allows for effective combat across multiple ranges without overheating too quickly.

Tactical Overview
The Bloodhunter variant of the Gargoyle can operate as a long-range fire support unit thanks to its twin ER Large Lasers, while still excelling at medium- and short-range combat with its autocannon and Streak SRM-6. The inclusion of an ECM Suite provides it with excellent battlefield utility, masking its and its allies' movements from enemy sensors.
Its high speed for an Assault-class 'Mech allows it to reposition quickly, making it a versatile unit capable of hit-and-run tactics, as well as frontal assaults. While it sacrifices some armor for speed and heat dissipation, it compensates by keeping enemies at a distance early on and devastating them in close-range exchanges.
This makes the Bloodhunter an excellent leader for a raiding Star or a heavy hitter in a more traditional battle line.
Accuracy and Rule Verification
The Bloodhunter variant adheres to the Clan tech rules for pre-Dark Age BattleTech game play. The usage of ER Large Lasers, LB 10-X Autocannon, and Streak SRM-6 is consistent with Clan technology available during the Invasion and Jihad eras. The loadout is balanced with the Gargoyle's internal structure and weight limits, following the rules for OmniMech construction and heat dissipation using Clan's superior double heat sinks.
The specifications, including the allocation of weight for weapons, armor, and engine, are verified within the constraints of the BattleTech game rules before the Dark Ages era.
