The Grim Reaper was not built during the dynasty's golden age. It predates the golden age. The records that might have documented its commissioning - the purpose it was designed for, the mind that decided such a thing should exist - are gone, along with the civilization that kept them. What remains is the Grim Reaper itself, still operational, still moving through the galaxy on business that has never been formally concluded.
It does not belong to any campaign. It is not assigned. It simply goes where it determines it must go, completes what it came to do, and departs. Dynasty commanders long ago stopped attempting to integrate it into formal battle doctrine, after discovering that their orders were not rejected so much as not registered. The Grim Reaper acknowledges no chain of command it did not predate. It processes its obligations in an order determined by calculations older than most stellar systems in this region of space - and it is never early, and it is never late.
The rumors - and among those who know enough to speak of it at all, they are whispered very carefully - concern a visit it made to the domain of the god of blood. Daemon princes of the Blood Throne had accumulated debts that the Grim Reaper had come to collect. The princes refused. This is the part of the account that those who tell it always pause on, because what happened next is not how the god of blood's domain is supposed to work. The Grim Reaper did not retreat. It did not negotiate. It noted the refusal, updated its ledger, and collected more. What it had come for, plus interest for the delay, plus additional dues for the skulls shattered in the disagreement. The Throne of Skulls was reportedly lighter afterward. Several absences in the Blood God's hierarchy have never been publicly explained.
The twin blades are old enough to have names in languages that no longer exist. The cloak has been through things the universe has agreed not to repeat. The Grim Reaper carries both without ceremony, without announcement, without any apparent awareness that either is remarkable. They are tools. They are adequate for the work.
There are those who argue about whether the Grim Reaper is conscious - whether something that old, something that far from its original context, still has purpose in the meaningful sense of the word. The argument tends to resolve itself when the Grim Reaper arrives somewhere. Purpose is not the question. The question is whether your name is in the ledger. And whether the ledger has ever, once, in many thousand years of continuous operation, contained an error.
It has not.
