Greater Good Bladerunners

Description

There are suicide squads. The Bladerunners are not suicide squads.

The distinction is meaningful. The survival odds are not.

The Greater Good has a precise operational category for situations that cannot be approached through conventional force - too fast-moving for fire support, too entangled for orbital assets, too close to friendly positions for anything that kills at range. These are the situations that get handed to the Bladerunners. Not because the Bladerunners are expected to survive them. Because experience suggests they sometimes do, and they tend to complete the objective either way.

The helmet is not equipment. It is surgery.

Implanted at the cranial interface level, it does not filter or interpret the battlefield - it delivers it, raw, in full, across every available sensory and analytical layer simultaneously. Threat geometry. Atmospheric pressure shifts. Thermal differential. Acoustic signature mapping. The brain of a trained Bladerunner processes this as a single unified awareness that has no equivalent in unaugmented cognition. It is not faster thinking. It is a different category of thinking entirely, achieved through direct chemical enhancement - stimulants, reaction amplifiers, pain suppressors, and compounds for which the Greater Good pharmacological corps has not released civilian designations - fed continuously at concentrations that would be fatal to the unmodified.

The helmet also keeps the brain running when the body stops. This is not an accident of design. A Bladerunner decapitated in close engagement remains operationally aware for as long as the circulation system within the implant holds - days, in documented cases - continuing to process, to track, to report. The Greater Good recovers these when possible. The information is useful. The optics are something the title race's communications division manages carefully.

What they accomplish in the field is the kind of outcome that has no comfortable name. Impossible positions broken. Extractions completed from situations that were assessed, formally, as non-recoverable. High-value targets reached through defensive layers that should not have been penetrable. The after-action reports use the word "success". The people who write them do not linger on the cost column.

Some come back. Enough that the programme continues. Not enough that anyone calls the odds good.

They go in with a blade, an overloaded nervous system, and everything the Greater Good's pharmacological arsenal can push through a direct cranial feed. They go in anyway.
