As acting commander of the celebrated 101st Airborne Division during the Battle of the Bulge, General Anthony McAuliffe would find himself encircled in the strategically vital town of Bastogne by a superior German force. When called upon by the German commander to surrender, or be annihilated by artillery fire, McAuliffe delivered his now-legendary monosyllabic reply – “Nuts!”. Bastogne was held until relieved, and McAuliffe would go on to serve as a senior officer for the remainder of the war.
