The character of war actions, in Afghanistan revealed great dependence on helicopters. In connection with this Mil's design office modernized its famous helicopter Mi-8. The vehicle now had new engines and many feature; were improved. Increased energy capabilities allowed to increase the fire power by enlarging board and suspended armour and also to increase to maneuverability of the helicopter which is especially important in mountain batlles.

Характер боёв в Афганистане выявил острою зависимость войск от вертолетов. В связи с этим в начале 80-х годов КБ Миля модернизировало свой известный вертолет Ми-8. Новая машина получила наименование Ми-17, ее оснастили новыми двигателями и усовершенствовали многие элементы конструкции. Был расширен состав вооружения и улучшена маневренность машины, что особенно важно в условиях боев в горах.
