Ectopistes migratorius, commonly known as the passenger pigeon, was a species of bird that was once one of the most abundant bird species in North America.
They were known for their striking beauty and incredible flocking behavior, with flocks estimated to contain millions of individuals. However, the species was relentlessly hunted and captured by humans, leading to their rapid decline.
Despite attempts to protect the species, the last known passenger pigeon, Martha, died in captivity at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914.
