Description

Hovasaurus boulei was a small, semi-aquatic reptile from the Late Permian period, found in Madagascar.

Belonging to the Tangasauridae family, it was well-adapted for swimming, with a streamlined body and elongated tail. Fossil evidence suggests it had a counterweight of gastroliths (stomach stones) to help with buoyancy control.

Hovasaurus likely hunted fish and small aquatic prey, spending much of its time in freshwater environments.

Its adaptations resemble those of modern aquatic lizards, showcasing an early example of reptilian water specialization.
