Model Description:
This download contains a highly detailed model of the SU-122 Self Propelled Gun. Documentation and references for the real vehicle were rigorously studied to make the model as geometrically accurate as possible, except in the cases where printability would have to be sacrificed (such as the fender thickness).
Historical Description:
The SU-122 was inspired by the German StuG III Assault guns and was a soviet attempt to create their own armored infantry support platform. The SU-122 mounted the 122mm M-30 howitzer on a T-34 chassis with the turret removed and replaced by a casemate design. The vehicle was designed in parallel with the larger, KV-1 based SU-152 spg. The SU-122 retained the strong armor of the T-34 and was more mobile due to the reduced weight from removing the turret. A total of 638 vehicles were built between late 1942 and mid-1943.
In Armored Advance:
In armored advance the SU-122 provides a large cannon on a quick chassis. The vehicle costs similar amounts to some later war tanks, such as the Panzer IV H, however, boasts much higher damage per shot. Furthermore, the vehicle may fire high-explosive to combat infantry units effectively, in a way that vehicle-mounted MGs cannot match. The vehicle does come with the caveat that it is unable to fire its main gun at vehicles beyond 18", or infantry beyond 24". This means that the vehicle will have to use its mobility and rely somewhat on its armor to see the most effectiveness. The gun also takes a while to reload, having to take a one turn break between shots. Nevertheless, when infantry needs to be dealt with, or a vehicle needs to be crippled if not outright deleted, the SU-122 can do the job.
