Description
Menoceras arikarense was a small, extinct rhinoceros that lived during the Early Miocene, around 20 million years ago, in what is now North America.
Unlike most modern rhinos, Menoceras was relatively lightly built and likely more agile.
It is best known for its unusual sexual dimorphism: males possessed a pair of side-by-side nasal horns, while females lacked horns entirely.
This suggests the horns were used for display or competition rather than defense.
Menoceras arikarense inhabited open woodlands and grasslands, browsing on low vegetation and playing a role in the diverse prehistoric mammal communities of the Miocene epoch.
