Description

Hyaenodon leptorhynchus was a species of carnivorous mammal that lived during the late Eocene to early Oligocene, around 33–40 million years ago, in North America.

It belonged to the extinct group Hyaenodonts, which were among the top predators of their time.

This species was relatively slender, with a long, narrow snout and sharp, shearing teeth adapted for slicing flesh.

It likely hunted smaller mammals and scavenged carrion. Despite the name, Hyaenodon was not closely related to modern hyenas but shared similar ecological roles.

Its fossils provide insight into early mammalian predators before the dominance of modern carnivores like cats and dogs.
