Description

Tylosaurus proriger was a gigantic mosasaur that dominated the seas of North America during the Late Cretaceous, around 85–80 million years ago.

Reaching lengths of approximately 9–13 metres, it was among the largest marine predators of its time. Unlike dinosaurs, Tylosaurus was a highly specialized marine lizard related to modern snakes and monitor lizards.

It possessed a long, streamlined body, powerful flippers, a shark-like tail, and jaws filled with sharp teeth.

Its distinctive elongated snout may have been used to strike prey. Fossils from the Niobrara Formation of Kansas have even revealed remains of other animals preserved in its stomach.
