Description
Numidotherium koholense was an early proboscidean that lived in what is now northern Africa during the Early Eocene, around 46 million years ago.
Discovered in Algeria, it represents one of the earliest known members of the elephant lineage.
About the size of a large pig or small tapir, Numidotherium had a compact body, relatively short limbs, and a low, elongated skull. Unlike modern elephants, it lacked the enormous trunk and towering proportions of later proboscideans.
Its teeth suggest a diet of vegetation, while its anatomy indicates an animal adapted to warm, forested environments. Numidotherium provides valuable insight into the early evolution of proboscideans.
