Description
Edestus vorax was a remarkable prehistoric shark-like cartilaginous fish that lived during the Carboniferous Period, roughly 300 million years ago.
Known from fragmentary fossils, it belonged to the unusual genus Edestus, famous for its bizarre tooth arrangement.
Instead of continuously replacing individual teeth like modern sharks, Edestus grew curved rows of teeth that formed a distinctive scissor-like dental structure.
These jaws may have been used to slice or grip soft-bodied prey. Edestus vorax inhabited ancient marine environments and represents one of the many extraordinary evolutionary experiments among early cartilaginous fishes, long before modern sharks and rays became widespread in the oceans.
