Age of Chivalry (Early 15th century) - Hussite Noble on foot

The nobles who sided with the Hussite movement often held motivations that were often more political than religious, driven by rivalry with the German-speaking elite as much as by devotion to reform. On the battlefield, however, they appeared much like their crusading counterparts. Hussite nobles rode as fully armoured knights, wearing Italian or German plate harnesses with mail voiders at the joints, bascinets with aventails, and occasionally kettle hats for fighting on foot. Their horses might be covered with heraldic caparisons, though unlike foreign crusaders they often fought under the plain chalice banner of the Hussite cause rather than their own arms.

In combat, these mounted nobles carried lances for the charge, supported by longswords or hand-and-a-half swords, maces, and axes. When integrated properly into Hussite tactics, they proved valuable, sometimes waiting behind the wagon forts and then leading charges out to strike enemy flanks. If their numbers were small, they even fought within the Wagenburg itself, dismounting to add their weight of arms to the infantry. Though far fewer in number than the peasant masses, Hussite nobles brought with them the prestige, equipment, and fighting skill of Europe’s knightly class, and when coordinated with the Wagenburg system, they proved formidable.
