Description

Thrinaxodon liorhinus was a small, burrowing cynodont that lived during the Early Triassic period, around 250 million years ago, shortly after the Permian mass extinction.

Fossils have been found mainly in South Africa and Antarctica, showing it was widespread across Gondwana.

Roughly the size of a modern fox, Thrinaxodon had a robust body, short limbs, and differentiated teeth, traits that link it closely to early mammals.

Evidence of preserved burrows suggests it may have sheltered underground, possibly aiding survival in harsh post-extinction climates.

Its anatomy marks an important stage in the evolution of mammals.
