Based on the T34 hull and using the high-velocity cannon 85mm the SU-85 gave the Russians much needed firepower, combined with good mobility, to take on new German tank designs such as the panther and Tiger. It was produced cheaply and in great numbers.
The Su-85 was produced from September 1943 until late 1944 where it was replaced by the SU-100. The SU-85 soldiered on into the late war, often being passed onto Polish and Czech units.
The SU-85 continued in service after the war ended and served throughout the cold war period in such conflicts as Korea and Vietnam.
