Among the Queensland outback resides the Bush Rangers: a dreadfully underfunded, undermanned and outgunned branch of the East Australian Armed Forces. Seeing more combat than any other branch, their role, however, is deemed non-essential owing to the fact that smugglers and two-bit ganglords aren’t seen as a threat to the sovereignty of East Australia, unlike Western Australia’s idolatry of Asian megacorps. Where the border force of East and West Australia is made up of sizable garrisons spanning the Simpson desert and beyond, the Bush Rangers that encircle the Chrome Coast Autonomous Zone’s border are made up of only one small battalion, holding about five hundred active duty soldiers.
Their task is mostly focused on border patrol and safety, staking out convoys of suspected smugglers smuggling counterfeit goods into, or out of, the Chrome Coast. These convoys range from a single small car filled with LED-Heads boosting counterfeit chips across the border, to a blacklisted corpo-funded roadtrain a hundred metres long, plated in heavy armour and armed with autoturrets and explosive countermeasures. Whatever the case, the rangers will find a way to appropriately deal with their targets, ensuring they never reach their destination, though due to their small numbers, many potential targets slip through the cracks. Being targeted by the Rangers is thus considered a stroke of bad luck in the Chrome Coast’s underground. For about every twelve smugglers that gets to their destination, one instead meets a lead-filled end at the hands of the EA Bush Rangers.
When caught, the Rangers dispose of their targets with brutal efficiency, having extremely open and prejudiced rules of engagement, with an open fire policy. Surrenders are not accepted unless all members of a hostile squad surrender in unison, and clearly demonstrate their inability to instigate a surprise attack or final stand. Most hostile units are killed to the last man, who will usually be put on life support for mind scouring instead of a traditional interrogation, at which point they will be disposed of after. Delta Squad are those under the command of Captain “Dusty” Echoes, an ex-corpo enforcer from the Coast who knows just about every trick of the trade the smugglers use to get into and out of the city, and thus knows exactly how to combat them.
