The Imperial gunship, also known as a police gunship was first introduced during the war between the Republic and the Confederates to perform law enforcement duties on the capital planet of a galactic republic. It was designed to be sleeker, smaller, and less heavily armed than the standard attack gunship, making it more suitable for policing a densely populated urban environment while minimizing the risk of collateral damage.

Following the establishment of a galactic empire, this patrol transport was adopted more widely by the imperial military. It served not only as a patrol craft on various worlds but also as an escort for some of the empire's capital ships. The patrol transports were extensively utilized in combat against various rebel groups during the early stages of the rebellion and throughout the Galactic Civil War.
