In magic is heresy. In heresy is death. In death is glory. Words that bind the Knights of the Inquisition in Baldur. Those who serve the Inquisitors are warriors and specialists who have spent years in training, learning the ins and outs of magic and spellcasting and how to counter each and every kind. In recent years the Inquisitors have seen less action as licensed magic became more adopted by magic users, and no great purges have been declared for over half a century. Yet now another is hailed, and those behind steel visors can finally sate their thirst for violence, power and discipline upon the masses.

A clandestine order of mage hunters formed in the Second Era, originally founded to hunt powerful dark magic users that threatened the stability of the realm, as well as powerful Elven Druids that enacted guerilla war tactics against Baldur’s frontier colonies. As the conflict with these druids grew more dire, their methods of execution against their colonist grew more gruesome, slowly torturing their victims to death in public manners, or unleashed cursed afflictions and plagues against the towns. Eventually, use of Minera’s Breath became a taboo and macabre thing in Baldur, and was banned from practice by its own residents as well, at least forms of “dark magic” that might do harm to another being.

Over time, this definition broadened, depending what was convenient to the powers at the time, yet the nobles who enforced this ban each held their own court mages, powerful wizards from across the continent who were paid in fountains of gold for their services to their liege. For many still practicing sorcerers and wizards across Baldur, this was their only hope to be legitimate practitioners of their craft. The Inquisitors ensured few made it there however, for their job had now become one to find, detain and execute any and all magic users who were found to be practicing dark magic, or were unlicensed practitioners of any other accepted magics (as few as they may be). This has resulted in the Inquisition seen as an institution that operates in the shadows, an omnipotent boogeyman that might snatch away those accused of heresy or dark magic in the night.

Up until recently the order was seeing a decline, it seemed that magic had been mostly stamped out of Baldur, or at least those that practiced it operated far beyond the eyes of the Inquisition. They had begun employing Dark Inquisitors, secretive agents with an aptitude for Minera’s Breath. These agents were tasked with uncovering such covens through sting operations, though the dark spellcasters of the realm quickly grew privy to it, and found out quickly how to uncover and execute the moles. This lead to the order dwindling in its purpose, for the dark mages seemed to be doing little harm to Baldur, until recently. Five years ago an insurrection took place in Grimgate, whereby a military general attempted a coup against the Crown. Though he was struck down, the ultimate story run by Baldur’s town criers was that he had been mind controlled by a dark wizard, a simple scapegoat to dissuade any notion that the loyalty of Baldur’s top brass might be wavering. Still, this resulted in the Crown having to commission a new Inquisition against spellcasters that lasted the better part of a year, with minimal results, though much renewed public interest in the order who very rarely operated beyond their closed doors.

Now they are called to their second Inquisition in half a decade, after the spate of terrorist attacks across the continent, the Inquisitors are summoned and kicked into full gear. With a larger force than they have ever held, their thousands of knights across the kingdom are tasked with kicking down doors, arresting and executing any and all magic users who might hold ill intent towards the King and Field Marshal of the realm. In Grimhelm this affair is at its bloodiest, for the largest contingent of Inquisitors dwells there, and each of its knights are itching to drive their blade through the back of a conspirator and sate the thirst for violence that drove them to join the order in the first place.
