A Colossal from the Frozen Wastes of Oldavor who has taken to life on the high seas. Though Arakun’s past in Tharador is far behind, its scars still haunt him. Echoes of the screams of the dying, fires of war, the stench of death: all spill into his dreams, yet his stoic nature buries these deep beneath the mask of his waking mind.

In his younger years, Arakun was among a Setonic tribe of the Oldavori Colossals that enjoyed a quiet existence among the frozen northern shores of the forgotten kingdom. His people were fishermen, eking a living on ice fishing or plunging into the bone-chilling depths to scrounge for frosted clams or other foods for feasts. Though there were other hunters that dwelt beneath the ice than themselves. Arakun was but a boy when his father was battered beneath the ice sheets by the great beast Kakunayu. A kraken in the eyes of the villagefolk, though the more seasoned fishermen knew it to just be a very territorial and aggressive Colossal Squid. Arakun’s family suffered for the loss of their father, with him as the eldest forced into his father’s role.

Yet the hatred Arakun felt for Kakunayu burned hot enough to melt the ice sheets, and before long he began plotting his vengeance against the beast. A bloody battle ensued, with Arakun injured and the beast retreating into the depths beyond. Soon after, the seas grew empty around his village. The people told Arakun had put a curse on them by attacking Kakunayu, who some saw as a warding spirit that protected the shoals and corralled their food in place. With him left, the fish were no longer bound to this area, and left with him. As a result of his impudent behaviour, Arakun was exiled, forced to wander the wastes where he fell into a Wastewalker clan, though that was a short- lived expedition, with the clan slaughtered by Nix Centipedes shortly after he had joined. Believing he was cursed, and no longer wishing to be a blight upon his people, he walked south into the warmlands beyond Oldavor, thinking he would find his death at the hands of a Watchman.

Though no such release came, and venturing further south, he found work as muscle-for-hire for a time, and a semblance of normalcy came to him, finding work on a fishing skiff for a while. That was until he realised the value of gold in the lands beyond his home, and that his place on that skiff was not enough to sustain a life. Thus he searched for other means, joining the bounty hunter guild, the Mandril Vilor, as a means to garner fruitful employment. The first of these tasks came with searching for a rogue hedge mage in the forests of Formen, alongside a group of his colleagues. When they located the hedge mage, discovering it was one of the Triarchs of Leacianus, Valius Hanar, who was operating in the kingdom to stage robberies and steal Liturium from the caravans of his allies. Though this meant little to Arakun, he followed in the stride of his colleagues when they reported the matter to the King of Formen, Hjolmir I. It was then that Valius appeared, murdered the king and framed the bounty hunters. Arakun and his companions were imprisoned for days, until their names were eventually cleared and the truth was unveiled behind Leacianus’ treachery, leading the Liturium War soon after.

Though Arakun kept with the Mandril Vilor for a while after, he became haunted with the guilt of what happened, watching the war unfold and walking through ashen and bloodstained lands. After enough blood money had been planted in his coffers, he left his life as a bounty hunter behind, returning to the sea in Southern Baldur. It was here he met with Baradin, and the two formed a bond of brotherhood that would see them found their own crew and sail the seas upon their own planks and gold. Though Arakun’s appetite for blood has not been dulled, his mind is still haunted by the memories of the Liturium War, and the own brushes he had with death thereafter. All of it is hidden under his collected and stoic demeanour though, and not much breaks him from it.
