Hailing from Alatet, Ervin was branded a traitor and warranted for arrest after dodging the call to arms for the Elemi War of Reclamation. With the law on his tail, he boarded the worst ship he could find in the docks, which introduced him to Baradin Blackbeard, though years before they would claim the illustrious Gilded Seahorse.
Son of an Elven Father and Water Elemi mother, Ervin was born through an Elemi Siring Contract, his father having never met him, for he was paid for his part to bolster Abunor’s population and went on his way. Thus he was raised in the dogmatic and militaristic manner that was normal among his kind, those born through Siring Contracts. He was purchased by the state, and to the state he would serve, raised within a Tribunal Creche until he was old enough for schooling in the city’s military academy. No choice was given to him or the kin he grew up with, and those who could not perform the duty they were bred for, would fall to the bottom rungs of society, in the lowest and most repulsive roles the Council could think of as punishment for their failed investment.
Ervin never particularly excelled at anything, simply coasting by under the radar. Perhaps his one remarkable attribute was being so particularly unremarkable, so much so that the officers of the academy who had taught him for four years would often forget his name. Yet it was by their word and will that he would live or die when war came, a rumour that brimmed all through his youth until one day it became true with the Elemi War of Reclamation. Ervin had only served in the navy as a helmsman for a few years before the war was declared, and before he knew it he was being prepared to sail across the open ocean as part of the second wave of reinforcements. The horror stories that were carried back from the front were enough to chill the bones of even the most seasoned warriors. On the morning he was to ship out, Ervin flew the coup, diving into the surging sea as dawn broke, pursued by his crew and a host of wardens.
Beneath the waves he disappeared, surfacing thirty minutes later at the hull of the most waterlogged and rickety vessel he could find; something that barely looked seaworthy. It was here he met Baradin Blackbeard, the Dwarven captain of the leaky tub who was readying to take it out to sea. Ervin volunteered to be his helmsman, exchanging his services for an inconspicuous way out of the city. The two quickly bonded as they relayed their life stories to one another, and Ervin found a place of belonging among the rickety boat, and Baradin found one of his first crew. Though years later they now have the much more illustrious Gilded Seahorse, both reminisce about their early days. Ervin recently has taken on a companion pilfered from a previous vessel, a rather clever monkey from the jungles of Ukrondia that he has named Spud. Having taught Spud how to plunder and use a sword, he has added 1 more member to the crew of the Gilded Seahorse before their voyage into the unknown.
