Raised in a military household, Gwendolen’s father was an anointed Knight of the Realm, and her brothers followed within his footsteps. Yet knighthood was never in the cards for the youngest daughter of the Proud family, for women could not be granted the honour, nor did her family wish for their daughter to serve in the frontlines. Instead, her father ensured her place was in the safety of Grimgate, as part of the Order Force. Though he never imagined her to climb the ranks as quickly as she did, showcasing her aptitude for enforcing justice. Being a Justiciar in Grimgate, she now sees more action than even seasoned soldiers.
Raised in a spacious cliffside manor just north of Grimgate, Gwendolen’s earliest memories were spent in the sparring room and training yard of her family’s compound. There she would sit idly, watching her three old brothers beat each other bloody with training swords, their father reprimanding them for each limp-wristed strike or sloppy parry. In her younger years, she felt little envy towards them, taking comfort in the more domestic pursuits instilled on her by her mother. But as years went by, she came to envy the camaraderie and rivalry shared by her brothers, who all held a special bond she felt she could not be part of, regardless of her attempts. Though her father and eldest brother Laurence would humour her with sword techniques and light drills, they never saw her as a would-be soldier, but a would-be homemaker, one who might cement an alliance with another Baldurian lesser-noble house in the near future, or with the right cards, a greater house.
When her last brother graduated from Grimhelm Military Academy, Gwendolen felt a sense of sadness. Her two older brothers had already been posted to the Ukrondian and Sudd Tohsti borders. Now, with the last sent off to do his service and obtain his knighthood, like his father and brothers before him, the old Proud Manor will sit empty, save for Gwendolen, her mother and their household servants. Not waiting to be married off like some strategic trinket for her family, Gwendolen thus gave her father an ultimatum: allow her to join the military and make honour for their house, or see her disappear across the horizon, never to be seen again. Though her father chose the former, he came to a compromise, unbeknownst to her, submitting her an application for the Order Force Academy instead of the Military Academy. Though she was furious at the notion, she accepted her fate after learning of Laurence’s death at the Ukrondian border, killed in a battle against abolitionist rebels. His corpse was never recovered, but the funeral shook her to her core, and through grief, rage surfaced, a rage that could only be tempered by a pursuit for justice, a thirst to crush the rebel cause that slew her brother.
Thus, she joined the Order Force, as her father wished. Given a basic role as a warden in Grimgate, she swiftly climbed the ranks owing to her relentless work ethic, quick wits, impressive fighting capabilities, and most of all: her grit. Bounding from Warden to Justiciar in half a decade, she was the first female Justiciar appointed in Grimgate, and the youngest. Underlings whispered that she only climbed the ranks for climbing her superiors, or that she was given princess treatment as a noble. Such words often got back to her, but she paid little mind, she was instead focused on her duties as Justiciar: a judge and executioner of Grimgate’s courts, sanctified by Erdrydion to carry out justice to whatever extent she deemed necessary: Gwendolen’s missions seldom ended in arrests. Now, after ten years in the Force and five years as a Justiciar, Lieutenant Gwendolen Proud is a name feared by all rebel cells within Grimgate. During the civil unrest that has engulfed Baldur for the past year, she has been a stalwart shield against the tide of unrest, and has kept the gallows and firing squads exceptionally busy.
