The University’s Alchemy Professor, Luther Fleck was among those employed by Draksborne’s Crown to study the first strains of Dragonblight. Whilst there is no confirmation as to how it reached Canos, with Bastian the Everknowing one of the first infected, Luther has often held the heavy thought that it may have been from one of his samples unwittingly spreading the ailment to his colleague. Regardless, he has lived with the fact that he failed in his duty, unable to understand, nor find a cure to the plague before it wreaked havoc upon the kingdom and ultimately destroyed the city he calls home.
Whilst Luther enjoys the returned sanctuary that the University of Canos brings, each time he steps beyond the Isle of Awe, he is reminded of his failure and responsibility for the havoc Dragonblight wrought upon his home. The city he was birthed in, raised in, learned and worked in all his life. Brought to rubble from his own ineptitude at understanding the aberrant disease of Dragonblight, when it was first brought to his office. Samples were kept deep in the vaults beneath Noxas Block, yet somehow spread beyond their containment. Whether it was by Bastian seeking them out, or his own misdoings, he will never know. Either way, the samples that were his responsibility, infected Bastian the Everknowing, and ultimately caused the Dragonblight outbreak in Canos, with Bastian proliferating it across the city’s southern districts.
Before this, Luther had never failed at a task so momentously. Setbacks in his research was common. But never had an innocent life been lost at his hands, let alone thousands. The weight has carried with him ever since, and whilst he maintains his persona as a no-nonsense professor, students often catch him in dissociative moments, where his eyes wander to nowhere, staring emptily out to nothing. Would that he could, he might have become a professor of chronology instead, and found a way to reverse the mistakes of his past.
But now, he must live with them. Every day. He meticulously visits and checks the vaults each night after his final class, ensuring that no tiny samples of Dragonblight remain. When the Rat King was first brought to the vaults beneath Noxas Block, he protested against Professor Vahlen, who outranked him as the Head of Aurveil, insisting they remain there. Since the Rat King’s disappearance, he has become increasingly irritable as the bags begin to weigh heavy under his eyes, kept up each night with thoughts of what might occur should the Dragonblight infected monstrosity end up in the wrong hands, which it likely has. Alongside Professor Vahlen and Professor Fairfax, Fleck aims to find out who took the creature and why, and will lend whatever aid he can to other investigators in the matter.
