A terrible plague was created through genetic experimentation by the Ancients. Their goal, apparently, was to create a virulent plague carrier that could be dropped into enemy areas, where it would multiply rapidly –and infect the local populace with a plague that would turn them into ravenous monsters, causing widespread panic and instability!
Of course, cooler heads prevailed, and the project was shelved, and the specimens put into stasis. Then the apocalypse happened, and that was that. Until now. A recent event has caused a rupture in the facility, and the spawn rats have escaped! Those that the rats bite rapidly transform, becoming violent and minless Spawn Fiends! While they still retain the overall form of a man, they gain a large third eye and a mouth of writhing tentacles, their skin becomes thick and rubbery, and their arms transform into whip-like tentacles arrayed with dozens of serrated teeth.
This plague was designed for humans, but not all that get bitten are human. In the post-apocalypse world, those with mutations, or mutated plants or animals, could also be bitten. In a fantasy setting, it could be dwarves or elves or other weird beings. Either way, in this case the Spawn Plague has a more terrible effect: the victim’s genome is rewritten to be more human, while at the same time their non-human dna causes the plague to go absolutely haywire! The victim spouts tentacles, eyeballs, and other grossness all over their body, becoming a tormented SPAWN MUTANT!
Note that even if these unfortunates can be cured of the plague, they will first revert to human before (50% chance) continuing to heal and revert back to their original genome. If you ever want to see an elf cry, this is the way.
This listing is for pose 1 of 5 initial poses which were created for the Rats of GIM adventure module for Mutant Crawl Classics.
While these guys were designed for a post-apocalypse setting, they also work great in a D&D/fantasy campaign too: just change ‘genetic experimentation’ to ‘magical manipulation’ and ‘Ancients’ to ‘Mad Wizard’ and you are good to go!
The Mutant Mayhem Minis line of figures was designed for Mutant Crawl Classics RPG, but also go great with DCC, Gamma World, D&D or any game that uses 28mm minis.
Dark-Platypus Studio specializes in making models for role-playing game enthusiasts. Our models are designed to be printed in 28mm Heroic scale, the perfect size for Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, or other games that are often played on a 1” grid. They include Pre-supported versions and unsupported versions (in case you want to alter the size to suit your own needs).
This model was sculpted for our published adventure module, ‘THE RATS OF GIM’, which was produced via kickstarter a few years back. When the kickstarter was done, my original Spawn Mutants were sculpted traditionally (with putty and little tiny tools), and were only available in a pewter kit, which contained bodies and mutation sprues, so you could design your own varieties. That feels a little fiddly for 3D printing, so I have digitally sculpted these recreations to be true to some of the ones I personally created back then, and they print all as one piece. I may eventually make more different versions to highlight the randomness of the plague.
