Among the followers of Orochi, a divide exists between the shisai—devoted servants said to align with a kami’s will—and the shugenja, who seize divine power to serve their own ambition. Nanako walks the line between the two. Though raised in faith and service to the serpent kami Orochi, she has long abandoned passivity, choosing instead to wrest power from the divine for her own ends.

Once a devout follower, Nanako watched with resentment as the Ito clan claimed their place as leaders of Orochi’s temple. Where she clawed her way up through struggle and sacrifice, they seemed to ascend with ease. This injustice drove her to darker paths.

Through arcane experimentation, Nanako created the first of the abominations—twisted beings infused with Orochi’s stolen essence. Some whisper that the kami now rewards her with protection: a massive guardian serpent now follows her every step. Others claim it’s no guardian at all, but a former rival—transformed and bound to her through sinister rites.
