Ssgt. Douglas Donahue, Hero of Hill 929.
Two years into the Concordian campaign on Bruchland VII, elements of the 20th Armored were deployed as part of a wide ranging offensive aimed at the capture of an important industrial center. Attached to Echo Company, 319th Battalion, were a platoon of infantry from the 16th Rangers to act as recon. During the 3rd night of the attack, the company was ambushed as it ascended Hill 929. Within minutes of the battle beginning over a third of Echo company's armored vehicles were destroyed or disabled. Unbeknownst to the soldiers attempting to scale it, Hill 929 was garrisoned by an enemy tank hunting unit. In particular, several superheavy destroyers were hidden, hull-down in the forest of the hill. Due to their maneuverability as well as their apparently lower threat level, the Recon platoon survived the opening salvos, and were able to scatter with their APCs into the forest and out of the line of fire. Rain began shortly after the recon platoon escaped the line of fire, trapping many of the vehicles, friend and foe, in mud. Because of this, the superheavy destroyers were trapped in their fortified position.
As the officers of the platoon met to plan their night, Ssgt. Donahue walked into the clearing they were in, carrying the injured captain of Echo company over his back. Both Ssgt. Donahue and the captain's vehicles had been hit in the opening shots, both men were the only survivors of their vehicles. This began the night that created the legend of Ssgt. Donahue. Begining with the rescue of Echo company's captain from his burning tank, and continuing with a series of a brutal raids onto the enemy superheavies. Though injured himself, he met the enemy, blade in hand, time and time again over the course of the night. Using stealth he and his men approached the fortified leviathans, and tore them open from above.
The exact account of events is hard to piece together, but the numbers have been estimated to relative accuracy. By morning the enemy armored element had been rendered ineffective, having lost over 60% of its vehicles to raids and ambushes by the rangers and surviving armored forces. Ssgt. Donahue held the particular honor of raising the Banner of Concord above the enemy command vehicle, after having slain its commanding officer personally. Due to his deeds and the immense number of wounds he sustained, he was awarded the Solar Star as well as the Medal of Concord, the highest medal award given to the Starborne.
