Frankly, when looking at the new Grombrindal miniature there's almost no way to describe it other than Grombrindal in Space (and it helps if you use a booming voice and prolong the a in space to spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace). We're so excited about this new Grombrindal miniature that we wanted to show it off in the best possible way.

Now, we should explain this madness a little, before we go any further. You see, there are doubtless dozens of ways to secure yourself a copy of White Dwarf magazine each month (buying it from the supermarket when you're doing the weekly shop, asking the newsagent to reserve it for you and so on), but few are more convenient than picking up a White Dwarf Sub-in-a-Box. Exactly what it sounds like (well, more or less. Sub means subscription, rather than a bread roll or an underwater boat), the Sub-in-a-Box contains a year's subscription to you monthly hobby fix, plus it comes with the exclusive Grombrindal miniature, exclusively available only to subscribers. That model, is what we're so excited about right now.

This year the honour of sculpting the new Grombrindal miniature went to sculptor-guru Dave Thomas, whose talented hands have brought us cracking miniatures such as High Marshal Helbrecht, Sammael the Master of the Ravenwing and dozens of other fantastic Citadel miniatures. Before sculpting the new Grombrindal miniature, Dave had to cook up an innovative idea for the model - something that would allow for an entirely original Grombrindal model, whilst retaining the character of the world-famous White Dwarf. The result of Dave's ponderings (and the end-product of his considerable craftsmanship) is the fabulous Grombrindal in Space that you can see here - a delightfully witty nod to the sci-fi heritage upon which Games Workshop has been built and a stunningly detailed miniature that should prove a real challenge to any painter.

Dave's work has paid careful homage to a number of sci-fi motifs and these can be seen in a variety of ways across the model - from the space rocket shaped earring dangling from the Goblin's ear to cosmonaut-style leather helmet and the retro-look jet nozzles that emerge from our favourite Dwarf's backpack. It's fair to say that the cheeky gags Dave has sculpted on to the model enhance the character of the piece dramatically, paying a fitting tribute to the old school humour visible in many of our classic Citadel miniatures. Of course, the background of Warhammer inspires many of these interesting touches too - after all, the Warhammer world is Grimbrindal's native environment.

'I wanted to make it pretty clear this is still Grombrindal,' Dave explains. 'After all, while it's a bit of fun, it's also Grombrindal, possibly the most famous Dwarf of all and certainly one of our best-loved characters - he's an icon in his own right. So, I couldn't dismiss that - and gave it a place with things such as the Goblin grasped tightly in the servo-arm. Dwarfs and Goblins have a history of bitter enmity and nobody hates the foul Grobi more than Grombrindal. In my mind, as I sculpted this model, I kept thinking back to the times when the infamous 'Black Gobbo' has tried to usurp the White Dwarf.'

A careful inspection reveal a series of Dwarfish details across Grombrindal's newest miniature - his futuristic hammer is adorned with the Rune of Might, his beard is decorated with an ancestor rune and even his backpack boasts the runic script X-6. It doesn't take the wisdom of Valaya to see the link to Bugman's famous XXXXXX brew now, does it?

Grombrindal's snazzy new paintjob comes courtesy of 'Eavy Metal's Keith Robertson, who decided that an orange, cosmonaut-style space suit was in order for our intrepid Dwarf hero. Although Dave Thomas had always invisioned his model with a typical white space suit, a bit like those you would expect a NASA astronaut to wear, he wasn't disappointed with the result. 'Dwarfs are predominantly beard, after all,' he said. 'and a white beard and a white space suit - along with a white helmet and the white-grey of the Goblin's suit - could all start to look a little bit over the top.' We agree with Dave's overall assessment; 'it really is a superb scheme that complements the retro details I've added to the model'.
