Extract from the diary of captain Thomas Cochrane, on board of HMS Arab, 13. June 1803
"I will happily admit that our mission won't be quite as boring as I feared, even though I still think my talents are wasted here and I'd be far more useful sinking French ships. Henry Slater revealed himself to be more than a simple naturalist and explorer, he is a special agent of the Royal Society and follows direct orders from the admiralty. We are searching for an outpost that the Portuguese have built on that rock and mantained until some 20 years ago. Mr. Slater wouldn't tell me what he expects to find in that outpost, but given that the admiralty is willing to commit a ship and a captain of my calibre to this effort, I expect nothing short of treasures. He has asked me to pick 6 able, reliable men and accompany him on his expedition."
