Most of the wounded were happy to be sent home. They'd served their time at the front and could return to the safety of the walled cities with a chest pinned with medals and shrapnel. Some might even sport a distinguished limp or rakish eye patch to impress the folks at home. But McCreedyloved it too much. A day without a battle was a wasted day in his eyes. The men say he bribed the medical inspector and threatened the life of a clerk in order to get sent back to the trenches. So here he is, and even with a metal leg, he's worth any 5 soldiers when the shells start to fly!
