Description
Futabasaurus suzukii was a genus of plesiosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, around 85 million years ago.
Discovered in the Futaba Group of Japan, it was one of the first nearly complete plesiosaur fossils found in the country.
Measuring approximately 7–9 meters (23–30 feet) long, Futabasaurus had a streamlined body, long neck, and powerful flippers, making it a skilled marine predator.
It likely fed on fish and squid-like creatures. This discovery provided valuable insights into marine reptile diversity in the Pacific region during the Cretaceous, highlighting Japan’s role in the ancient marine ecosystem.
