Description
Dromornis australis was a giant, flightless bird that lived in Australia during the Miocene epoch, around 15 million years ago.
Belonging to the family Dromornithidae, it stood up to 3 meters tall and weighed approximately 500 kilograms, making it one of the largest birds to ever exist.
Despite its massive size and powerful build, it is believed to have been herbivorous, using its strong beak to crush tough plant material.
Dromornis australis had small wings and stout legs, adapted for walking rather than flight.
Its fossils, found in central Australia, highlight the continent's unique and diverse prehistoric megafauna.
